The minimum shift design problem

چکیده
The min-SHIFT DESIGN problem (MSD) is an important scheduling problem that needs to be solved in many industrial contexts. The issue is to find a minimum number of shifts and the number of employees to be assigned to these shifts in order to minimize the deviation from workforce requirements. Our research considers both theoretical and practical aspects of the min-SHIFT DESIGN problem. This problem is closely related to the minimum edge-cost flow problem (MECF ), a network flow variant that has many applications beyond shift scheduling. We show that MSD reduces to a special case ofMECF and, exploiting this reduction, we prove a logarithmic hardness of approximation lower bound forMSD . On the basis of these results, we propose a hybrid heuristic for the problem which relies on a greedy heuristic with a min-cost max-flow subroutine based on the network flow analogy followed by a local search algorithm that makes use of multiple neighborhood relations. An experimental analysis on structured random instances shows that the hybrid heuristic clearly outperforms our previous commercial implementation and highlights the respective merits of the composing heuristics for different performance parameters.

A hybrid network flow tabu search heuristic for the minimum shift design problem
The minimum shift design problem (MSD) is a scheduling problem that commonly arises in workforce management activities. Given a collection of shifts and workforce requirements, the problem consists in finding a minimum cardinality set of work shifts, and the number of workers to assign to each shift, in order to meet (or minimize the deviation from) prespecified staff requirements. This problem...
متن کاملA mixed AI-OR heuristic for the minimum shift design problem
We study the minimum shift design problem (MSD) that arose in a commercial shift scheduling software project: Given a collection of shifts and workforce requirements for a certain time interval, we look for a minimum cardinality subset of the shifts together with an optimal assignment of workers to this subset of shifts such that the deviation from the requirements is minimum. This problem is c...
متن کاملFORM FINDING FOR RECTILINEAR ORTHOGONAL BUILDINGS THROUGH CHARGED SYSTEM SEARCH ALGORITHM
Preliminary layout design of buildings has a substantial effect on the ultimate design of structural components and accordingly influences the construction cost. Exploring structurally efficient forms and shapes during the conceptual design stage of a project can also facilitate the optimum integrated design of buildings. This paper presents an automated method of determining column layout desi...

متن کاملCRITICAL INCIDENT ANGLE FOR THE MINIMUM COST DESIGN OF LOW, MID AND HIGH-RISE STEEL AND REINFORCED CONCRETE-COMPOSITE BUILDINGS
One of the main tasks of engineers is to design structural systems light and economic as possible, yet resistant enough to withstand all possible loads arising during their service life and to absorb the induced seismic energy in a controlled and predictable fashion. The traditional trial-and-error design approach is not capable to determine an economical design satisfying also the code require...
